10 of: The Most Striking Day of the Dead Cakes

Dia de Muertos: Day of the Dead.

Know about it? I bet you do....but there are still some that have never heard of this celebration!

It's a Mexican holiday running from Halloween to the 2nd November, where they will build elaborate alters and decorate graves to celebrate and remember the people they have lost....inviting them back to Earth to visit them. The most common decorations are Marigolds (the flowers of the dead), plenty of candles, fruit, nuts and of course...sugar skulls. These are highly decorated beautiful skulls originally made from sugar or clay, but now the name is used for any highly decorated skull, such as drawings, models and pictures.

How's that for a nice little bit of education on a Sunday! There are PLENTY of things still to learn about this event, including La Catrina. She is to Day of the Dead, what Santa is to Christmas. And personally, I think she looks bad-ass :D

An even better way to learn (and much more fun way) is to watch the kid-friendly film 'The Book of Life'. Its a cool little flick! Anyway, if you didn't know what it was before, these next 10 cakes will make abit more sense to you now. Heres my pick of 10 awesome Dia De Muertos cakes :D
